There are many deficiencies in the current
education system that has resulted in the inability of health care
professionals to function effectively in 21st-century health care systems. The
module examines ways in which changes can be made to ensure that health care
professionals are “fit for purpose” upon graduation. The module will cover the
fundamentals of teaching and learning including the design of
outcome/competency-based curricula, basic principles of their delivery and an
overview of the assessment of learners. The module addresses the societal needs
and emerging expectations for health professionals. Learners will identify these
needs and expectations, work out the gaps and propose measures that should be
taken to close the gaps. In particular, the module will discuss the role of the
teacher in 21st-century health care professional education and eventually provide
the learners the opportunities to explore the relevance of these measures at the workplace. Various aspects of this module will be learned more extensively in
subsequent modules in the course
